Emissions Testing in Denver

Emission testing is becoming commonplace across America as individual agencies are realizing the effect car exhaust has on the environment. Today, nearly everyone relies on a personal automobile for transportation to and from work, for running errands, and even enjoying a vacation. While individuals in major cities may benefit from public transportation, many of these still utilize their own car or truck in order to reach their connection to public transport. With so many people, not only in America, but worldwide driving everyday, a vehicle’s emissions needs to be regularly checked for the future of our planet.

Depending on where you live these emission requirements are different but all seemingly perform an extensive check of your car’s exhaust system to ensure an appropriate amount of emissions takes place when in use.

Different states and sometimes counties have varying levels of scrutiny and in particular, most compliance depends on the model year of the automobile in question. For the state of Colorado, system checks are performed by Air Care Colorado on all gasoline powered vehicles. Diesel automobiles are regulated by an entirely different program.

If your vehicle was manufactured in the last one to seven years it is exempt from the emission testing protocol, but don’t forget to keep track of the dates as it may soon need inspecting. Specifically, if your car is a 2010 or 2011 model then inspections will be mandatory soon.

Older Automobiles

Automobiles eight to 11 years old are tested with an onboard diagnostic plug-in test and vehicles 12 years old back to 1982 with a dynamometer assessment. Cars and trucks older than 1982 are tested via a two speed idle tailpipe test.

A variety of factors could cause your vehicle to not pass inspection but owners are given an opportunity to correct any issues and retest. This is when the car should be taken to a professional for service in order to ensure a clear report when conducting a retest for a previously failed assessment.

Fortunately, many of the common reasons for a failed emission test can be easily corrected. Colorado residents have ten days to return to an Air Care Colorado site for a free retest following an initial failed result. Often after diagnosing the problem and seeking a professional remedy many automobiles are given a clean record and can be back on the road.
