Denver Car Repair: The Difference Between Synthetic Oil, Synthetic Blend, and Conventional Oil

Oil

Regular oil changes are necessary to keep your engine in good shape and ensure your car continues to run smoothly. But, what kind of oil should you use? Before bringing your vehicle into a Denver car repair shop for an oil change, it’s important to understand the difference between synthetic oil, synthetic blend, and conventional oil.

Synthetic Oil

As its name suggests, synthetic oil is a type of oil that is produced in a laboratory using various chemical compounds. Many customers are hesitant to use synthetic oil because it is more expensive than conventional oil, but price isn’t the only factor that you should consider when choosing oil. Synthetic oil typically lasts between 6,000 and 10,000 miles, whereas conventional oil only lasts between 3,000 and 5,000 miles. Therefore, even though it is more expensive, it is a better deal because you won’t have to change your oil as often.

Synthetic oil is also known to provide better lubrication and more protection during start-ups than synthetic blend and regular oil. In addition, synthetic oil does a better job of protecting your engine from heat. Is synthetic motor oil better for your car?

Synthetic Blend

Synthetic blend motor oil is a mix of conventional and synthetic oil. This type of oil was created so customers could experience some of the benefits of using synthetic oil without having to pay as much for it. However, synthetic blend oils do not last as long as full synthetic oils. Therefore if price is not an issue, then it’s best to pay a little more for synthetic oil instead of settling for a blend.

Conventional Oil

Conventional oil, which is also referred to as regular or standard oil, is refined from natural crude oil. There are different types of conventional oil—some that are of a higher quality than the others. But in general, conventional oil is much thicker than synthetic oil, and it also has a much lower resistance to heat. Although conventional oil is cheaper, it will need to be changed more frequently, so in the end, you may pay more by choosing conventional over synthetic oil.

Which should you choose? Check the owner’s manual for your vehicle to see what the manufacturer recommends. Many high performance and newer models require synthetic oils, so it’s important to follow these instructions when getting an oil change. If you don’t have the owner’s manual, talk to your mechanic. Conventional oil may be appropriate if you only use your vehicle to run errands or drive a short distance to work. Otherwise, it may be best to get a synthetic oil that will last longer and provide better protection to your engine.
