One car component often overlooked and underappreciated are a vehicle’s windshield wipers. Frequently never given a second thought or even a first for that matter, until they’re needed, windshield wipers and their routine maintenance are considerably underappreciated when analyzing the functionality of an automobile.
Vehicle owners routinely focus on fueling, oil changes, battery and tire wear but often never give their windshield wipers another thought following installation. However, when the rain or snow begins to fall and it’s the wipers turn to shine, driver’s depend on their functionality and performance.
In fact, wipers could be considered as one of a vehicle’s top safety features. They increase visibility during difficult times and must be serviced and maintained appropriately to ensure serviceable use.
Before it’s too late, consider checking the performance of your car’s wipers as most will reveal signs of wear and tear even without being put to use. Some signs of wiper wear include the following:
- Split and/or cracked rubber in various spots
- A cloudy film left behind because of dirt, oil, or grime on the rubber blade
- Rubber appears to have pulled away from the wiper frame
- Wiper frame is bent or broken causing the arm not to function properly
- Blade does not make full contact with the windshield
Many of these deficiencies can be observed without even putting the windshield wipers in motion. If you notice cracked rubber or separation from the wiper frame, replace the blade or blades immediately. If not, your visibility could be dramatically decreased during a rainstorm, when a wipers performance needs to be at its’ premium.
General wiper blade maintenance also suggests possible deterioration factors from the elements of exposure on a vehicle. Sun, oils, airborne debris, and moisture - yes, even moisture, can increase the wear on a pair of wiper blades.
A suggested replacement schedule is every six months for wiper blades. Remember to keep an eye on the functionality of your vehicle’s wipers and if you notice any streaking, blurriness or squeaking - a change may be needed.
Don’t get caught out in the rain with your visibility limited because of an omission in the care for your car. By keeping on top of your car’s needs, including the windshield wipers, you can increase the safety of your on the road performance, especially in certain weather conditions.
