Denver Car Repair Shop Explains Three Easy Ways to Increase Fuel Mileage

As gas prices increase, drivers everywhere are looking for ways to save money in an effort to keep their fuel costs down. By not having to fill up at the pump regularly and extending the fuel economy of your automobile, this can be achieved easier than most think. While driving a more fuel efficient vehicle may be the biggest step in cutting fuel costs, most everyone is not going to give up their larger vehicles for a smart car any time soon. For this reason, other steps need to be taken helping save gas in the car or truck you already drive.

Fuel

By following these three simple steps, you can begin to increase your miles per gallon and eventually won’t be stopping for gas near as often. If you can save just one tank full in over a two month time span that’s roughly $20 per month saved with little to no effort and not having to trade in your current ride.

If you can save just one tank full in over a two month time span that’s roughly $20 per month saved with little to no effort and not having to trade in your current ride.

Step Number 1 - Lighten the Load

How often do you carry around unused or unnecessary items in your current vehicle? Whether it be books or bags of clothes you’ve yet to donate, items you’ve picked up from a friend but have yet to unload, or your golf bag and clubs even when not planning to get out on the course - each of these adds additional weight to your car or truck.

The heavier your load the more fuel it takes to move the vehicle, hence auto makers always touting their lighter models making known why you want a lighter car. Eliminating some or all of these items will help to increase the fuel economy of your automobile and lengthen the amount of time between gas station visits.

Step Number 2 - Use the Cruise Control

Most all cars on the market today come equipped with cruise control yet it remains a highly underutilized feature. Unless fortunate enough to be out on the open freeway for miles on end, most drivers fail to engage their cruise control systems and thus are using more gas than they need.

Engaging the cruise control more regularly can help to even the ride for your vehicle and limit excess gas being used during fluctuations of the gas pedal. By cruising on highways and even at lower speeds the cruise allows your car or truck to maintain a consistent speed instead of constantly increasing and decreasing your travel, which uses more fuel.

Step Number 3 - Drive the Speed Limit

Finally, driving the speed limit instead of going faster can significantly save your fuel consumption. Fuel efficient driving is most sustainable between 25 miles-per-hour (mph) and 60 mph with a significant increase in fuel consumption at speeds greater than 60 mph.

By following the posted limits, your vehicle will stay on the road longer as less gas is used to move you from place to place. Each of these three steps can be practiced individually or together to optimize the most fuel efficiency for your vehicle.
